Waste information

General information

Before waste may be put into land fill, the waste holder must provide basic information about the waste in the form of a waste information notice (‘Abfallinformation’).

Caution

In genral, these rules also apply for traders from EU Member States that have their registered office in Austria.

There is an essential distinction between:

  • Waste information notice to the authorised specialist person/institute
  • Waste information notice to the land fill proprietor

Depending on the type of waste, the quantity of waste and the frequency of occurrence (regularity) one or several waste information notices must be issued.

Caution

Waste information notices must – with some exceptions – be sent electronically.

Requirements

Waste information notice to the authorised specialist person/institute

The "waste information notice to the authorised specialist person/institute" is relevant for waste that has to be thoroughly characterised by an authorised specialist person/institute. The thorough characterisation must determine and document the most important properties that are relevant for permanent deposit. This generally includes a chemical investigation. Documentation is in the form of an assessment certificate.

Prior to this kind of chemical investigation, the waste holder must submit basic information about the waste to be inspected to the referee in the form of a waste information notice to the authorised specialist person/institute. The referee can carry out the inspection based on this information. The content of this waste information notice can include:

  • the waste holder
  • description of waste
  • place generated/place of origin
  • description of the origin of the waste and treatment steps

Waste information notice to the land fill proprietor

If waste is to be delivered to a land fill, the waste holder must also submit a waste information notice to the land fill proprietor with the first delivery of this waste. This mainly includes

  • as well as the basic information (waste holder, place generated, description of waste),
  • the mass to be delivered and
  • the current assessment certificate.

For some types of waste (e.g. small quantities of uncontaminated excavated soil, certain types of construction waste, asbestos waste), no inspection by an authorised specialist person/institute is required – here, a waste information notice to the land fill proprietor with the first delivery of a type of waste is sufficient.

Please note

For other types of waste, an assessment certificate is also required in addition to the waste information notice.

Competent authority

The waste management agency that is responsible for the area in which the business is located

Procedure

The waste information notice must be submitted to the responsible authority.

On edm.gv.at can be found for support and guidance the "Formulargenerator Abfallinformation gemäß DVO 2008" (‘Form generator for waste information notice as per Austrian Landfill Ordinance 2008).

Please note

It is not necessary to register on edm.gv.at. However, it is advantageous (e.g. shorter input options).

For types of waste for which no authorised specialist person/institute is require ( e.g. small quantities of uncontaminated excavated soil, certain types of construction waste, asbestos waste), there are also paper forms available alongside the form generator.

Costs and fees

No fees or charges are payable.
